Seattle has long been made fun of for its months of dreary weather, but when the sun comes out, this city shines. The surroundings are amazing with Elliott Bay and Lake Washington on either end of the city with a view of Mount Rainier in the distance. The city has come alive in recent years aided primarily by the success of its computer industry (Microsoft and Amazon.com are based here) and the influx of new residents from around the US. Gay Seattle is primarily centered around Capitol Hill, a quaint, friendly neighborhood, but you'll find gay people living and working throughout this city and in its computer industry in the surrounding suburbs. Washington DC is notorious. Politics, crime, punk rock and protests have given this popular destination for the gay community a bit of an edge. The city's lively gay nightlife is centered within a couple of neighborhoods, easily accessible by public transportation. Several top hot spots are located in Dupont Circle, just a few minutes walk from Dupont Circle Metro stop. Here you will find glam mixed with button-down conservative types and everything in between. Or you can head downtown for some leather action. After playing the tourist during the day, soaking in the US history that drips from most of the capital, you'll need to unwind. Drinking, dancing, lounging - whatever you're after, DC provides. Washington, D.C., situated along the banks of the Potomac River between Virginia and Maryland, is a showcase of national treasures. The city's streets are a patchwork of museums, historical landmarks, art galleries, monuments, government buildings, restaurants, shops and cafes. Not surprisingly, the politically charged environment lends the city an air of distinction and a penchant for activism. Washington's gay think-tank is one of the most committed and savvy GLBT communities and is home to some of the most powerful and visible gay men and lesbians in the country. If you find you've had your fill of history and culture and choose to sample a different type of excitement you'll find some big name attractions just outside the city. Busch Gardens, Water Country USA and Six Flags America are only a short ride away. |
